Deluge system Wet all over

Last year the Moncton office of SGE Acres designed and installed a deluge system to protect a large expanse of glass wall at the new Greater Moncton International Airport. The objective is to protect the interior of the building from radiated heat in the event of a fire on the apron. This year, the office, in conjunction with the Clarenville office, who are the project managers, designed a similar deluge system to protect three large propane storage containers at North Atlantic Refining's Come By Chance facility.

Recent code changes for this type of fire protection require that 100 percent of the surface should be wetted. Three storage tanks are involved at Come By Chance: a 42-ft diameter sphere and two 10-ft x 38-ft bullets. In order to maximize coverage and minimize the number of nozzles SGE Acres engineers used a 3-D drawing approach, studying piping sizes and nozzle selection for each ring of coverage in order to identify the optimum solution. In operation, the deluge system draws 3900 USgpm of water.

Newfoundland & Labrador mapProcessing Labrador nickel

An Inco subsidiary, Voisey's Bay Nickel Company (VBNC), is planning to process concentrate from its mine in Labrador at a new plant to be built at Argentia, on Placentia Bay in Newfoundland. In an extended test of the hydrometallurgical process, the plant is being developed in three stages. First, a 1/1000 scale mini-plant is being constructed at the Inco Technology Centre in Ontario, and is expected to operate for a full year. On the basis of this experience a 1/100 scale pilot plant will be designed and constructed at Argentia, beginning operation in 2006. If the feasibility is confirmed, the full-scale plant will begin construction in 2009, for a 2011 start-up or else a different technology will be used in the full-scale plant.

SGE Hatch is already at work for VBNC, assisting in the development of the mini-plant, and in preparing the site at Argentia. Services include design and modification of office and warehouse buildings, topographic surveys and preliminary studies and designs for the proposed site.

New fire stationNew fire station

SGE Acres was engaged by the town of Truro, Nova Scotia, to prepare detailed construction drawings for a multipurpose building. Designed to blend with other buildings in the downtown civic block - among them the County Museum, Town Library and Police Station - the new building includes five bays for fire-fighting vehicles, an operations area, accommodation for volunteer fire fighters, and Council Chambers.

Decongesting Mount PearlDecongesting Mount Pearl

Mount Pearl is a 30,000-person and growing city near St. John's, Newfoundland. As part of an urban redevelopment program for the Centennial Square area, SGE Acres conducted a traffic and transportation study which incidentally provided an excellent display tool for use at public meetings.

The study examined travel characteristics and traffic operations for the entire downtown roadway network, including a major arterial roadway, 15 intersections, and many roadways and driveways. Data was used to construct an animated network-based computer model which simulates traffic patterns. It was used to examine optimal performance, and as a visual aid at many public hearings. SGE Acres also developed an access management strategy for the arterial roadway.
