Acres International - Innovations (Autumn 2003)
Seminar draws attention from across the continent

The Seminar opened with technical-paper presentations by 10 experts in design and rehabilitation of flow-control equipment. The keynote address, by Mr. Ron Arrington of the US Bureau of Reclamation, provided a germane perspective on the history of the USBR and its recent rehabilitation projects at the Roosevelt and Arrowrock dams. Other presenters included John Barbour of Ontario Power Generation, Don Coulson of Coulson Hydrotech, Harvey Walsh of Great Lakes Power, Tom May of NB Power and several Acres presenters. Positive feedback from participants clearly confirmed the relevance of the topics covered.

Friday evening, registrants were treated to a medieval feast at the Henry VIII restaurant in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Entertainment was provided by not only the king, queen and their assistants, but also by guests participating in various games that were intended to embarrass and intimidate. The evening was a huge success.

Niagara Falls, Ontario

On Saturday morning, the Gates of Niagara tour offered a glimpse of Niagara's largest gates as well as the Sir Adam Beck No. 2 GS. Guests also viewed the control room at the International Control Works Structure and the 225-ton Beck 2 Tunnel Intake Gates.

Acres International has been active in the design of gate equipment and gated structures since the company's inception 80 years ago. This experience has been instrumental in providing clients with the services to accurately assess rehabilitation requirements of aging gate equipment and structures, while taking into consideration client budgetary constraints and equipment reliability.
